Laminate flooring

Another recent job I finished in York. The customer had carpet in her bedroom but she decided it is now time to redecorate the room. Following some painting and wallpapering the flooring was the last step. She wanted to change the carpet to laminate flooring and this is where I stepped in.

I started with ripping up the old carpet and underlay. As it was still in decent condition, the customer posted them to an online marketplace and luckily someone came and took all away the same day. This saved me cutting up the carpet and taking it to the skip. After the underlay I had to take up all the carpet grippers as well. This is always the most hated step. You simply just can’t do a job when you dont stab yourself with the gripper at least once.

As soon as this was over, I had to check that the floor is smooth and doesn’t  have any old nails or staples poking out. For the next step I started to lay the new underlay for the laminate floor. I like to tape the corners down so it won’t move as I’m walking up and down over it. This part was a relatively quick one and I could start to lay the actual laminate floor. The first two course are always the tricky one as the flooring is not heavy enough yet and moves away for even the slightest  of touch. This time it further complicated the process thay I had to fit the first course right under a doorway. I used my multitool to cut into the doorframe so the laminate  floor is slipping under it nicely, leaving a seamless finish. At the start, I also had to measure and set out the pattern for the flooring to ensure a neat finish.

The next phase is quite monotonous. Clicking the floorbaords, measure, cut, click another one on and so on so forth. In the meantime make sure everything  is square, the flooring didn’t move and you keep the pattern. Some tricky cuts around radiator pipes and within a couple of hours I finished all the flooring.

Before we started the work, we agreed with the client that we leave the skirting on and we finish the job with beading around the edges. Coping saw, utility knife and quick grab adhesive were my weapon of choice for this step, and within an hour I was finished. A quick tidy away and the work is finished. The customer is over the moon and I was really satisfied with the project as well.
