Woodburner repair

A quick repair job on a woodburner just outside of York. It was a relatively easy handyman type job, but it definitely helped that I was working with woodburners for over 5 years.

This model had a tricky, soft close system with two catches on the door. One at the top and the same at the bottom. The top one was missing a bolt and because of this, the door didn’t close at all. All I really had to do is to carefully take apart the upper catch, find a matching bolt in the toolbox and put everything back together.

I had to be careful while taking the catch apart as it has two springs operating the soft close and release catch (slightly over-engineered). First of all, I didn’t want these springs ending up in my face, second, I didn’t want to damage the ends of the spring, otherwise it will never go back properly again.

Using 2 long nose pliers, a screwdriver and all three of my hands I managed to take apart the catch with no issues. I found a same thread bolt in the toolbox, all I had to do is to cut it down to right length. The re-assembly was actually a lot easier then the dismantling process as there were no bolt missing any more. Once it was all done, I checked both catches, I checked that it closes and releases nicely and showed this to the customer as well. Quick tidy up and I was on my way to my next address.
