This job was a bit of an odd one as we installed the concrete lintel, cast iron fireplace and the wooden surround as my full time work, but the customer asked if I can help with the extension of the tiled hearth on the side.

The hearth was made out of quarry tiles but it wasn’t quite wide enough for the new fire surround, so I had to remove a few tiles from the edge and extend the width of the hearth. Once I took away the tiles, I had the clear and prepare the surface for the new layer of adhesive. I set out the tiles and I realised that I have cut and chamfer some of them (these are all handmade quarry tiles) to match up nicely.

I stuck the tiles and once the adhesive was set I mixed some sand/cement to point up the joints. Once finished and dried you could hardly tell that it was extended recently. Customer was really pleased with their new fireplace and hearth.
